This painting depicts the dark night sky with the moon and Venus, along with fluid and dynamic shapes. The scenery was inspired by the view from the window at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy, France. Although the painting depicts nighttime, Van Gogh worked on it at different times of the day. The village was partly imagined rather than copied directly from the view outside his window.
