A Background on AI Tools

What is AI?

When we think about AI, we consider the idea that it is a tool for us to use, to benefit us. Some examples of AI tools open to the public include the following:

But how exactly do we use it? Well, you might have seen people using it on social media to generate photos, or make a generative fill, completing images, or the notorious content generation. Some people like to use AI tools to answer questions on their assignments, or use the AI tool to even generate entire essays for them. AI is meant to be a tool for others to use. Oracle.com writes, "Machine learning is focused on building systems that learn or improve their performance based on the data they consume"(Oracle). This is how they operate, at least the ones generally used by the public. They write that the purpose is to aid in helping companies with tasks that once required human operation, and now can be in a way, automated. The use of AI in the way that people use it may become problematic, taking into account the way it operates.

Earlier, it was stated that many open AI tools that people use are based on Machine Learning(ML), this means that AI will compile information that is available to it, meaning works made by other people as well. Once the information is compiled, it will create an average, so to speak of those ways, and will generate that as the final answer. There are two major issues with this, and that is the idea of copyright infringement. It actively takes from other people's works, so is this an okay practice, and should it be held to the same scrutiny? The other issue is how it affects AI. When people commercially use AI like this, does it mean that it is in a way becoming dumber as people continue to use it the way they do? Read more on the other pages.
