Visual Kei is more defined by it's fashion over it's music, however, the style can change and depends on the music genre a group may be more fond with. Characteristics can range but influences for styles overlap and may include punk, gothic, and classical themes. People dress to stand out, often combining textures like leather, lace, embroidered details and bright colors that complement against black outfit elements. Styles also overlap with the beginnings of other Japanese subcultures like lolita and EGL.
Playing with gender presentation is also a common factor in many Vkei groups, especially with male members who will often wear thick eyeliner, sharp contour and lipstick. Malice Mizer's guitarist Mana-Sama is a prime example and figure of inspiration for today's visual kei scene, wearing doll-like outfits that also crossover into gothic lolita fashion, showcasing his own fashion designs for his brand Moi-meme-Moitie.
Today, Kei-fashion is of less relevance to the current scene since it is still an umbrella term that encompasses other subcultures. Visual-Kei appearance may be more recognized and defined these days by a distinct style of makeup, often mimicking the dark eye shadow, sharp contouring and pursed lipstick as often seen in the previously mentioned Mana-Sama, Atsushi Sakurai, or other notable figures of which today's makeup is more of an homage to.
