Yayoi Kusama was in Matsumoto Japan on March 22, 1926. She started painting as a child which is around the same time, she began to hallucinate dots. These dots are continuously a theme in her work from the past to today. When she got older, she moved to New York City where she worked on her pieces called “infinity nets” which consisted of thousands of small marks. Her work, became very popular in New York as she was up there with artists such as Andy Warhol and Donald Judd. In 1973, she decided to move back to Japan in 1973 where she checked herself into a mental hospital where she still lives today.
As time progressed, she continued her theme of dots and the concept of infinity. She has said that she uses her art to combat her mental problems. She began her Infinity Room installations in the 1960’s and continued to make more than 20 rooms! Her room called Aftermath of Obliteration of Eternity, 2009, was made from mirrored glass, wood, aluminum, plastic, ceramic, and LEDs. It’s been a couple of years since she’s done massive sculptures and installations, but she still lives in Japan where she continues to create.
