History of the Lincoln Memorial

In March of 1867, the Lincoln Monument Association was involved with building a memorial for the 16th president of the United States. The ground wasn't broken for the foundation of the memorial until February 12, 1914. The foundation was split into two parts that joined together in support of the massive structure. The foundation was completed in 1915 and work on the main structure continued steadily until 1917 when the U.S. entered WW1. Progress was slowed considerably however the memorial was fully constructed in 1922.
