Calculating Seasons, Equinoxes and Solstices Once we know the date and the latitude of the sub-solar point, it is possible to calculate the season for any point on Earth. The four dates that I had you memorize are the four solstices and equinoxes, which are the first days of Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter. The seasons in the Southern Hemisphere are the opposite of those in the Northern Hemisphere, like this:
In this way, June 22nd is the Summer Solstice for North America, and the Winter Solstice for much of South America. |
