SYNOPSIS:
UHURU! is an observational documentary portrait of the Uhuru Furniture and Collectibles thrift store in Center City, Philadelphia. Focusing on a normal day at the store, the film focuses on the eclectic assortment of people involved in the daily operations, from the managers and office staff making sales pitches and negotiating with the customers, to the blue-collar furniture haulers and truck drivers, to the customers, many of whom are neighbors and regular customers of the store. Over the course of the film, a portrait of the diverse community develops and the underlying mission statement of the furniture store is revealed: to support the African People's Education and Defense Fund, an initiative to defend the human and civil rights of the African community, by donating all proceeds to the cause as well as holding community fundraisers, bake sales, and protest movements.
