Modern Times: Symbolism and Economic Value
Nowadays, roses are mainly used as gifting flowers for Valentines Day, Mothers Day, etc. The United States population spends around 3 billion dollars annually just on roses, and 3 billion in flowers overall for Mothers Day.
Valentine's day is the 5th biggest spending Holiday in the U.S. Florists, on average, stock around 250 million roses just for Valentine's day.
A dip after 2020 was theorized to be because of the lasting COVID 19 pandemic, creating economic uncertainity in many households. It has only recently just recovered, however, following inflation trends, spending on Valentines day is still overall down. Spending in 2020 surged due to it being the first year in lockdown, since people did not know how long it would last.
Rose geneology is still being actively developed, currently, scientists and farmers are trying to create a "true blue" rose, instead of the ones we have now, which are all artifically dyed to be blue.
Black roses are also currently outside the bounds of nature. There is less hope for the black rose, due to how few plants are naturally black. Most of the tones in nature that we call black are actually more of a deep red, violet, or blue. True black roses are also created with artifical dyes.
