With the overturn of Roe v. Wade by the United States Supreme Court in June of 2022, abortion policies and reproductive rights are in the hands of each state. This law for nearly 50 years protected the federal Constitutional right to abortion, however now, the Supreme Court gave states the freedom to decide to restrict abortion or prohibit it all together. Maintaining and expanding access to safe, legal abortion is a public health issue, especially for communities that now face more difficulty getting the services they need. The United States has the highest rate of maternal mortality than any other developed country. No one should be forced or controlled to carry an unwanted pregnancy that has detrimental effects not only on the person’s physical and mental health but on the unwanted child. Not to mention the economic impact. And to add that rape, incest, domestic violence, and even the life of the person are no longer considered exceptions is beyond inhumane. The court has failed us and has allowed the laws to continue the harmful gender-based violence and mortality.
