Francis Bacon

Francis Bacon was an Irish-British painter whose experimental style left its mark on the world. He was raised in a household with an abusive father. He was kicked out of his home at 17 and had to start a new life elsewhere. He eventually landed in Paris where he spent the majority of his artistic career. Bacon’s paintings were informed by his hard upbringing and his relationships with men, feeling outcast and rebellious on what was seen as beautiful. His forms are hard to look at, scratchy dry brush techniques used to create his interpretations of subjects. A subject of many paintings in the early 1960s was Bacon’s love interest at the time, Peter Lacy. Their relationship was rough and he painted it as such. His self portraits also depicted a beat-up appearance. Up until his death in 1992, he painted snippets of his personal life, struggles and interpretations of the world.
