What's a Furry Anyway?

Furries are a group or subculture that identifies people who have an interest in anthropomorphic animals. Anthropomorphism is the act of having human or human-like features. These are features such as walking on two legs, human speech, human cognition, emotions, and expressions.

Unlike most fandoms, the Furry Fandom does not center around a piece of media or a singular series. Much of the content and activities that are prominent in the fandom are created by its members. This difference makes the furry fandom unique and full of creativity.

One of the main values furries tend to embrace is being an open and welcoming community. Because of this openness, many furries tend to identify as LGBTQ+, and or Neurodivergent. People within the fandom often find it to be a safe space from discrimination, hate, and exclusion.

Because of the creativity and openness of the fandom, it has resulted in people feeling safe to express themselves in many different ways. One of these ways would be through anthropomorphic animal representations of themselves known as fursonas. Fursonas work as a way for people to explore their identity and expression, ranging from gender expression/ identity, social attributes, and personal style.

The furry fandom has its roots in internet fandom culture; however, it has grown from there over the years. Furries today host large-scale events such as conventions, as well as smaller local events like bowling or roller skating. For furries, the name of the game is to have fun, be kind to one another, and build strong communities.
