Artist Statement
Carson Stachura is a portrait photographer and archivist based in New York. Grounded in archival research with twentieth-century photographic collections, his practice responds to depictions of gender deviance and the trans portrait in historical image-making. By working in dialogue with the archive—its omissions, biases, and modes of visibility—Stachura’s portraits seek to complicate dominant narratives of trans representation, emphasizing agency, intimacy, and self-authorship over spectacle or legibility.
