Christina Quarles was born in 1985 in Chicago, Illinois. She now lives and works in Los Angeles, California. She attended the Yale School of Art and received her M.F.A. and then attended Hampshire College to receive her B.A.
She focuses on painting contorted bodies using acrylic on canvas. The figures torsos, limbs, and faces collide
with other objects and figures. As a queer cisgender women with black and white parentage, she is interested in contradictions of appearance and actuality. She explores the universal experience of existing within a body, as
well as the ways race, gender, and sexuality intersect to form complex identities.
