These facilities primarily focus on producing as many puppies as possible while ignooring the needs of the mothers and puppies. These facilities are poorly kept and overcrowded. Puppies raised in puppy mills are often sick and not socialized. These puppies also suffer from a variety of health problems due to them not be vaccinated as puppies. Once the Mother and Father can't reproduce anymore, they are either killed or abandoned. Puppy Mills primarily sell their puppies on the internet,at flea markets, classified ads, or to pet stores.

Missouri has the largest amount of Puppy Mills in the United States. Other states like Pennsylvania, Ohio,and Indiana have large concentrations of puppy mills. There are approximately 167,388 currently living in puppy mills today. 90% of the puppies sold in pet stores come from puppy mills. In order to do that, a puppy mill must be licensed thru the USDA. Pet stores are the main sales outlet for puppy mills. They will often ship puppies to pet stores. Even the shipping conditions are inhumane. Many puppies go more than 12 hours without food and water. Also being confined to a small space increases the transmittion of diseases. Many of the puppies that get shipped to pet stores do not survive.
