Rave fashion has evolved throughout the years, first consisting of phat pants, midriffs, boiler suits, overalls and visors in the 90s. In the 2000s, UV and neon colored clothing, cyber locs, cropped baby doll shirts, and bellbottoms. Furry accessories, bodysuits, bras, pasties, halters, tutus, microskirts, micro shorts and strappy bottoms are seen in more modern times. Smiley face imagery is common, along with the addition of aliens, galaxies, and psychedelic prints. Kandi is also common which are bright handmade beaded bracelets, necklaces or belts that are swapped around at raves. It stems from friendship bracelets, passed around during the 60’s in hippie culture. The bracelets are made to show peace, love, unity, and respect or PLUR. Pacifier necklaces are also worn at raves, usually used when ravers are on ecstasy to help lessen the pain from clenching the jaw while on the drug.
It is not uncommon for drugs to be taken at raves, although it is not required to take drugs at raves either. Drugs often used at raves include ketamine, ecstasy, GHB, LSD, speed, cannabis, cocaine, and PCP. Alcohol is not as common, which allows raves not to be age restricted due to the lack of alcohol. Alcohol is not used as widely due to the belief that alcohol will cause aggression and disrupt the PLUR ideology at raves.
