He is one of the first photorealsists to come out of New York, initiating the start of a ground breaking painting method in his work using airbrushing palymers. His "cropped image" figurative paintings and his life style phone booth series were featured at the photorealists exhibition at the Brooklyn museum, which is the first of many that would showcase his work.

He pioneered a new painting genre, influenced by studying the teachings of literary works on hyperreality by philosipher Jean Baudrillard. He named the movement hyperrealism based on the foundations of photorealism, expanding beyond the physical realistic dipictions of the picture but instead focusing on the subjective qualtiy behind the realistic detail of the painting.

Through Petersons paintings, he challenges viewers to face the social injustices within our world such as poverty, homelessness, and genocide to shed light on the problems within our society through the realistic quality of his paintings and to unveil a layer of vaulnerablity within the state of our country.
