Welcome to the band!

So what is a marching band exactly? Well to simply answer, marching bands are a group of people- instrumentalists and color guard performers (performers that dance, spin flags/equipment, etc.). These groups learn music and choreography to perform for audiences- or judges, if the group happens to be a competitive group (and YES! There are competitions for marching bands). The most renowned marching band competition is within organizations such as DCI and DCA (Drum Core International and Drum Core Associates)- note that there are other organizations such as Bands of America, but these are the, per say, “celebrities” of the marching band world. DCI and DCA is a non-profit group that has marching band groups, that tour the states and perform throughout the summer and compete, until finals.

Now WGI; WGI stands for Winter Guard International and this is another organization that focuses on the color guard. Color guard, to put it simply, are the performers on the marching band field that are typically dancing or spinning flags, among other various equipment. As the name suggests, this is an activity that happens during the winter (after the marching band season is finished) and is also a judged sport- though, these performances are typically always judged and performed in front of a live audience with a judging panel. WGI is an activity where dance, flag, rifle, sabre, and sometimes other props to show technique and create amazing, visual performances.
