Instructional Innovation
SYNOPSIS
Douglas N. Ross (Ph.D. University of Colorado) is Professor, Department of Management, Towson University (a metropolitan research /teaching university). He has been a Fulbright scholar --senior specialist -- in both Sweden and the Czech Republic (see http://www.cies.org/specialists/stories/ss_dross.htm.)
Since joining the faculty in 1990, he has
co-authored a book on internet retail banking strategy,
published about twenty-five refereed articles/chapters/reviews,
developed about a dozen cases, and presented over thirty
refereed papers.
His teaching interests include undergraduate and
graduate courses in business policy & strategic management,
international business, and business and society. He has received
both Teacher of the Year and Outstanding Service awards.
Current research interests include: Teaching/
Learning in hybrid (blended) courses; case writing; adaptation of
corporate strategy to changing economies; and corporate roles in
sustainability and global poverty reduction.
Prior to joining the Towson faculty, he served in
private, public and non-profit sectors as partner, Venture
Investment Associates, Washington, DC; senior economist, Joint
Economic Committee, U.S. Congress; and senior research associate,
The Conference Board, New York.

If China succeeds in its simultaneous move from developing to industrializing country and from command economy to 'market-oriented socialist economy' then one-quarter of the world's population can look forward to economic betterment.
Ross, Douglas N. "Culture as a context for multinational business: A framework for assessing the strategy-culture fit" Multinational Business Review (VII,1,1999). The paper develops a framework for assessing the "fit" between a country's culture and a generic strategy. It utilizes Hofstede's cultural dimensions together with Porter's generic business-level strategy typology to provide a two country (China-US) illustration.
