Net Art

Madison Buckwalter

Net art is one of the most free, uninhibited varieties of art that has arisen out of the computer age. The only limitation of the artists is their ability to code and create using the tools given to them by HTML and JavaScript. The possibilities are endless, as is proven by artists such as Heath Bunting, Jodi, Olia Lialina, Evan Roth, and so on. Net art has allowed artists to express themselves politically, socially, and emotionally through the internet, making their art available for free and open to public view.

A specific example of this is the We Link presented by the Chronus Art Centre. It is laid out in a Microsoft Vista type style with early OS interfaces and windows within the site itself, which is a feat all on its own and a bold stylistic choice. Each folder directs the user to a different part of the exhibition instead of using a traditional exhibition website. It is rather laid out like computer files and therefore more intimate and personal. Even the loading page is art, with glowing green command text. Some artworks are as recent as 2020, meaning that the entire site is nostalgic and a stylistic choice reminiscent of early computer interfaces and operating systems.
