Bowling Social - CANCELLED, SORRY :(

April 2, 2004 don’t miss the excitement when students and faculty party it up!  It will be the social event of the year…BOWLING!  All is welcome…hope to see you there. 

Community Service Projects 

SAACS has raised over 50 kg of nonperishable items for the Maryland Food bank.  A donation box can be found outside of SM 541.

SAACS members are geared up for Spring when they will take on the 5th grade class at Colgate Elementary School and challenge students to a vigorous day of chemistry.  If you are interested in helping this event will take place toward the end of March beginning of April.

 

February is Black History Month.  In honor of this celebration SAACS members are asked to submit a one page description of an African American in science.  All contributions are asked to be posted on the SAACS bulletin board outside of the chemistry computer learning center in Smith Hall by Friday February 13, 2004

Fall 2001 SAACS members volunteered at the Dallas Nicholas Elementary School in conjunction with the Irvine Nature Center helping 3rd graders with science projects.

 

College of Science and Mathematics Annual Picnic

SAACS and SPS (Society of Physics Students) host the annual Spring picnic at the Glen Picnic Area.  A great time to meet CSM professors and students.  Free food!  Dates for Spring 2004 will be posted soon.

Chemistry Magic Show

SAACS sponsors the Chemistry Magic Show starring Dr. Alan Pribula and Ms. Liina Ladon.  This event is held every semester is fun with chemistry. (Warning: you might learn something and/or gain interest in chemistry)

Meetings

The 2004 Fall semester meetings will be determined by the beginning of the semester. As always, meetings will be held in SM 539.

Professional Meetings

For the 2003-2004 academic year, the 226th National Meeting of the ACS will be held in Anaheim California.  If you are interested in attending this event please see a SAACS officer for more information.

For the 2002-2003 academic year, members of SAACS attended several ACS meeting. We attended dinner meeting of the Local Section of the ACS and the 225th National Meeting of the ACS in New Orleans. Our chapter received national recognition for our 2001-2002 Activities in the form of a Commendable Chapter Award. This is the first such award on record for our chapter! We Would like to thank all those that help fund our trip to New Orleans to receive our award in person. Special thanks to Dr. Intemann (Dean of the College of Sciences and Mathematics), The office of the Associate Dean The Chemistry Department, the Chesapeake Section of the ACS, Dr. Linda Sweeting, Dr. Alan Wingrove, Dr. Shirish Shah, and Ms. Gail Lukens for their generous support to fund our travel expenses.

Goggle and Notebook Sales

Notebooks are on sale for $15.00.  There are two types of goggles for sale.  New goggles $10.00, Used goggles $5.00.  All are available in SM 579.

Seminars

Departmental chemistry seminars are held throughout the semester, typically on Thursday at 11:00 am in SM 554 including an annual SAACS sponsored alumni seminar.
