Medieval Manuscripts Exhibit

The exhibit of illuminated mss. in Houston collections (yet to be given a real title!) will highlight medieval manuscripts from Special Collections of the UH library as well as manuscripts loaned by other local public and private collections. The books were chosen to encompass as wide a range of medieval book types as possible and include Sacred Christian books serving liturgical, devotional, and scholarly purposes; legal and medical books, and Jewish and Muslim religious books.

Also on display will be several works by UH studio art students that approximate or interpret a variety of medieval manuscripts.

The exhibit will be accompanied by a catalog that will address the various themes around which the exhibit is organized. These themes include the making of manuscripts, marginalia, the use of text as image, and the concept of books as treasure, as well as such topics as medieval music manuscripts, books of hours and women and the book, and the development of the bible.
