Call for Papers

The Texas Division of the National Society Magna Charta Dames and Barons invites essays from regularly enrolled college students at the junior or senior level in a Texas college or university. Though receptive to articles relating directly to the Magna Carta, the committee will also consider submissions on other closely related topics.

An award of $500 payable to the student's chosen college will be presented to the author of the winning essay at the Texas Division Magna Charta Dames and Barons State Parliament in March of 2002. Corresponding recognition and additional award of a student membership in the Texas Medieval Association (TEMA) will be given at the annual meeting of the Texas Medieval Association in September of 2002. The award is to be used for study in a Texas college or university.

The winning essay and/or others deemed suitable will be published, with the author's permission, on the National Society Magna Charta Dames and Barons website.

The purpose of the award is to encourage students to explore English history and to preserve our English heritage, to encourage students to publicize the contribution of medieval England to our heritage, to promote awareness of the role of the Anglo-Norman and the Angevin world in our history, and to recognize scholarly achievement in these pursuits.

Judging will be by a committee of two TEMA members and three MCD&B members. All submissions should be prepared according to the style and system of documentation found in The Chicago Manual of Style (current edition). The decision of the judges will be final. The Society reserves the right to make no award or to cancel the competition.

Each writer may submit one unpublished essay. Entries should consist of five copies, double-spaced, of 5,000-10,000 words length, in which the author is not identified, with a cover page containing the essay title and the author's name, address, and telephone number, as well as other information as detailed on the Cover Page.

Entries, which will not be returned, are due by December 15, 2001. They should be sent by first-class mail to
