THE WRITING TRACK (42 credits) provides students with an opportunity to refine the techniques and applications of writing essential for careers as writing specialists in government, business, and industry.


REQUIREMENTS FOR A WRITING TRACK - 42 credits

The requirements for the Writing Track are identical to those for the Liberal Arts Track, with the exception that students in the Writing Track must complete four upper-level writing courses but need not complete ENGL 361, Literary Research and Applied Criticism. ENGL 361, however, can be elected as one of the four upper-level writing courses applicable to the track.


I. Literary Heritage (18 credits required)

A. Survey of Development and Period
Lower-division (100-200 level)
Both of the following (worth three credits each):

Upper-division (300-400 level)
  • Two of the following (all worth three credits each). One course from this group or from the Literary Genre group below must represent literature before 1798 (courses marked with an asterisk at the end).

    B. Literary Genre
    Upper-division (300-400 level)
    One of the following (worth three credits each):

    C. Thematic and Topical Studies

    Lower or upper division (200-400 level)
    One of the following (worth three credits each):

    II. Analysis and Research (6 credits required)

    A. Analysis of Genre
    Lower-division (100-200 level) worth three credits:

    B. Study of Major Figure and Related Scholarship
    Upper-division (300-400 level)
    One of the following (worth three credits each)*:

    *Note: With approval of departmental advisor and chairperson, a student may substitute experience in a seminar or topics course to meet this requirement if the substitute focuses on a Major Figure.

    III. Language, Linguistics, and Literary Criticism (3 credits required)

    Upper-division (300-400 level)
    One of the following (worth three credits each):
