RECORDS AND ADVISING
To declare an English major, a student must be assigned a
departmental advisor and file both a Declaration of Major
form (to be forwarded to the Registrar) and a Departmental
Record form (copies retained by student, advisor, and the
English office). The department secretary distributes and
processes the appropriate forms and will assist students in
choosing an advisor.
As required by University advising policy, each major must consult
with his/her advisor prior to registration each semester. After
consultation with the advisor, the student reports to the English
Office to bring records up to date and to receive permission to
register for the following semester.
Special Requirements for English-Education Students
Students in the English-Education Track seeking certification must
register with the Secondary Education Department as well as the
English Department. They will be assigned advisors by both
departments. The Education advisor will assure that the student
meets all professional requirements (psychology, instructional
technology, education, and student teaching). The English advisor
will assure that the student chooses a pattern of English courses
pertinent to teaching language arts or English curricula. Students
in English Education should be aware that certification and
accreditation requirements specify that they must gain experience
in the following specific fields through the courses they select:
- College Writing or the equivalent.
- An advanced expository writing course.
- Specific study of non-western literature or culture.
- Literary Research and Applied Criticism.

- A course in Young Adult Literature.
- An advanced course in American literature.
- Experience with mythology, Shakespeare, literary history,
and the literatures of American minorities.
