THE ENGLISH EDUCATION TRACK (36 credits) prepares students to serve as teachers of English and language arts in middle, junior high, and senior high schools and to meet national and Maryland State standards for certification.


REQUIREMENTS FOR AN ENGLISH-EDUCATION TRACK - Total 36 credits


I. Literary Heritage (18 credits required)

A. Survey of Development or Period
Lower-division (100-200 level)
Both of the following (worth three credits each):

Upper-division (300-400 level)
Two of the following (worth three credits each). One course from this group or from the Literary Genre group below must represent literature before 1798 (courses marked with an asterisk at the end).

B. Literary Genre
Upper-division (300-400 level)
One of the following (worth three credits each):

C. Thematic and Topical Studies
The following course in EDUC worth three credits (counts in the 36 credit minimum for the English Major):

II. Analysis and Research (9 credits required)

A. Formal Analysis of Genre

*Note: The Department urges students to enroll for ENGL 361 very early in their program of study. The course develops skills in research, analysis, and criticial writing that they will find invaluable as they complete their upper-division requirements.
