POSTMODERN FICTION
English 270.001 - Scott Allen
Fall 1996
This course will be devoted to discussing works of "postmodern"
fiction from the 1940s to the present. Some of the authors on
the syllabus include Samuel Beckett, Donald Barthelme, Angela
Carter, Robert Coover, John Barth, Thomas Pynchon, Margaret
Atwood, Kathy Acker, and Jorge Luis Borges. About half of the
texts will be collections of short stories, and the other half
will be novels. Because all of these works are extremely
innovative and help us to conceive of fiction (and even life) in
new ways, creative class discussions and projects will be a major
component of the course.
