Dear Texas Medievalist,
dear Colleague,

I take great pleasure in inviting you to the 14th Annual Conference of the Texas Medieval Association, which will be held on September 17 and 18, 2004, at the University of Dallas.

As each year, the conference will be open to all medievalists (although participation does require payment of dues to the Texas Medieval Association for the year 2004). We welcome papers on any aspect of medieval culture-literary, historical, musical, philosophical, art-historical, or religious. The deadline for submitting abstracts is August 15, 2004. Please find further details in the 2004 Call for Papers.

This year, our invited guest speaker will be Professor Steven J. Livesey, of the University of Oklahoma. Professor Livesey is an expert in the history of science who has focused his studies on the tradition of commentaries upon Aristotle and Peter Lombard. At the University of Oklahoma, he maintains an electronic database of medieval commentators on Aristotle and Peter Lombard's Book of Sentences . Professor Livesey will speak on "Accessus ad Lombardum: The Secular and the Sacred in Medieval Commentaries on the Sentences." My own presidential address will deal with Peter Lombard as well, to whom I have recently devoted a book. Perhaps the importance of the Sentences as the standard textbook of Scholastic theology will render these plenary addresses interesting to everyone.

I am also happy to report that the David Brown Book Company will be selling books of medievalist interest on the University of Dallas campus during the conference.

Our official conference hotel this year is the Hotel Lawrence in downtown Dallas. The Hotel Lawrence is located at the heart of the city, just a stone's throw from Union Station, the Reunion Tower, the Sixth Floor Kennedy Museum, and the West End with a wide range of restaurants. Rooms will be available to conference participants at the very reasonable rate of $89; more spacious junior suites are priced at $109. For more information, please go to www.hotellawrencedallas.com. Please make your reservations as soon as possible, since the Hotel Lawrence is relatively small (118 rooms). Phone (214) 761-9090 or (877) 396-0334, mentioning the Texas Medieval Association. The reservations manager at the Hotel Lawrence is Ms. Dianna Ridge.

For transportation from the Hotel Lawrence to the University of Dallas, we would like to encourage you to use the train that runs from Union Station (just opposite the hotel) to South Irving station. The ride takes 18 minutes. A university bus will pick conference participants up at South Irving in the mornings and return them to the station in the evenings.

The traditional welcome reception will be held at the Hotel Lawrence on the evening of Thursday, September 16. It is sponsored by the Dallas Medieval Texts and Translation series.

I look forward to welcoming you in Dallas this coming September. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions about the conference.

With best wishes,
Sincerely,

Philipp W. Rosemann
