Art Deco was first exhibited in Paris in 1925 at the International Exhibition of Modern and Industrial Decorative Arts. This style came along shortly after the first World War. The inspiration behind the design and ornament of Art Deco was the advancement of machinery during this period. Designs were streamlined, geometric, and overall seemed to mimic the look of cars, trains and other devices. Motifs that were common during this period were the human figure, animals, flowers, and plants. However, they were stylized and abstracted to fit the new modern look of Art Deco.
Art Deco was thought of to be an escape from reality. Since the world was just coming out of its first devastating war, artists and designers wanted to create pieces that would make the public want to forget about the damage and destruction that was caused by the first World War. The Art Deco period can be recognized also as the style of the Roaring Twenties or the “Great Gatsby” style which can be shown by these images.
