What is Net Art?

Net art is an elusive and sometimes anarchic art form which uses the internet as its primary material. Net art works often draw on data from other internet materials such as websites, which helps give them their distinctive dynamics.

Definition

Net art terminology can be difficult to define, especially when successful artists have moved outside their “web domain.” The term net art usually refers to pieces that were created roughly from 1993 to the early 2000s. Today, artists working with the Internet as their medium now have more room for opportunities with the emergence of mobile devices. It can be hard to define the term net art, but at the very least, it must be dependent on the Internet to fit into this category, unlike digital art. The internet itself is performative, through its changeability and dynamics. To an extent, net art reflects this.

ASCII and ANSI Art

ASCII Art can be defined as the forming of pictures or art out of the characters of the available ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange). The letters, numbers and punctuation marks are chosen by the artist to create the shape and content of the image.

asci art

ascii art ANSI art is similar to ASCII art, but it uses ANSI (American National Standards Institute) escape code sequences to encode foreground and background text colors. This style of art was particularly popular in the 1980s, since home computers featured standardized color displays.
