Organizations and Advocates for Pro-Choice Maryland

NARAL Pro-Choice Maryland

NARAL Pro-Choice Maryland is a non-profit organization that works to elect lawmakers who believe in Pro-choice values. They work hard to educate communities in Maryland about reproductive health issues, politics and sex education. They hold events throughout the year to raise money toward the cause and also offer volunteer opportunities to involve the community.

A few projects that NARAL has recently contributed to are:

  • The Maryland Prisoner Rights Coalition: This project seeks to improve conditions for both adults and juveniles confined in state prisons, jails and detention centers. Interests include access to preventative healthcare, abortion care, prenatal care, and post-partum care, as well as environments where facility practices do not frustrate or jeopardize one’s sexual or reproductive health, especially in relation to healthy pregnancy outcomes

  • The Maryland Women’s Coalition for Health Care Reform: This project seeks solutions and advances reforms that promote health equity through access to comprehensive, affordable, high quality care for all Marylanders.

  • Women’s Economic Security Agenda (WESA): This coalition, led by Maryland Working Families, is supporting four bills in order to assist Maryland workers with establishing statewide earned sick leave benefits, paid medical or family leave programs, pay and advancement equity, and fair workplace scheduling and compensation practices.

  • It’s Lies Campaign: This project began in 2002 and has continued since. Crisis Pregnancy Centers are mostly run by anti-choice organizations with a goal of convincing pregnant women to carry their pregnancy to term. These centers advertise free services to women facing an unplanned pregnancy as a way to lead them to their locations. Once inside, they offer false or misleading information about abortion or birth control. NARAL Pro-Choice MD has worked to better identify these centers. Baltimore City made history as the first city in the U.S. to pass legislation which required CPC’s to display signs about their services. In 2015 the campaign posted billboards and bus advertising in Baltimore City to help educate the community about the motives of these centers.

Baltimore Abortion Fund

This is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization that helps individuals in Baltimore, MD who need abortion care but cannot afford the full cost of the procedure. A helpline is available to those who need referrals, financial counseling and financial assistance. They take donations and offer volunteer opportunities.

Planned Parenthood of Baltimore

Planned Parenthood is one of the nation’s leading provider’s affordable health care and the nation’s largest provider of sex education. An estimated one in five women have visited a Planned Parenthood health center at least once. They provide services such as pap tests, breast exams, sexually transmitted infection tests and treatments and abortion services. They also provide information on how to prevent unplanned pregnancy and other educational programs.

Planned Parenthood has more than 8.5 million activists, supporters and donors. There are many different ways to get involved with Planned Parenthood ranging from making donations to taking action against current obstacles women face.
